Boy Sketch

Picture
There was an art contest around February 2011, and I decided to make this drawing for it. It was made in a A3 piece of cardboard, and my only material was a pencil. Even though my drawing did not win the contest, I am very satisfied with the results. It was the first time I drew a sketch in a paper that was not the normal size (A4), but it came out really good. I could  see improvement from my last sketches and I enjoyed drawing it.

My favorite art material is definitely the pencil. It is a very simple material, but when I use it I really like what the results are. For this drawing, I had to work a lot on the shadows, so I could give my drawing three dimensions and depth. I think that the hardest part was drawing the nose, because I had to use only shadowing to give it shape. Overall, I enjoyed drawing this because it was different from any other drawing I have done before, and somehow it transmits more feeling that the other ones. If I were to do it again, I would shape the face better, and maybe add more details.

Symbolic Map

Picture
At the beginning of the year, we created a map in which we displayed our interests, hobbies, likes and dislikes, and important people and dates in our life. It was an autobiographical map, but instead of using words, we used little symbols to represent each event or interest. This project was made with watercolors, and we could use the different techniques for painting with watercolors that we learned during class. In my map, I drew various little symbols. There were tacos, representing my favorite food, soccer balls representing my hobbies and different drawings for my different family members.

Creating this symbolic map was interesting, but it was also very challenging. I do not usually paint with watercolors, or use them very often. For this reason, it was hard to get used to them, and painting was very hard at the beginning. The most challenging part about using watercolors was painting the little symbols, because they were so small that the watercolors got mixed and the color ended up different. However, after I painted a few symbols, I could do it a lot better. I think that my finished map looked good, very colorful and with different textures because of the watercolor techniques. It was a project that helped me learn new ways of making art, I really enjoyed it and would definitely do it again.

Clay Head

Picture
We had to create a clay head after we learned about facial proportion. For this project, we used clay, toothpicks and watercolors. The objective of the project was to create this three dimensional head, but with the right proportions so it was as realistic as possible. I had to make sure that the eyes were right in the middle of the head, and that the mouth, nose and ears had the right size.

I really enjoyed making this head, because I had the chance to use different materials, and I had not worked with clay for a long time. It was really fun, but however, it was hard to create and add all the little details using clay. It was complicated to make the face look realistic because the clay was hard to use for me. What was the hardest was the eyes, because I first had to create two holes in the face, without distorting it too much, then I had to add the eyeballs and finally cover them with little eyelids. Some of the pieces were falling off, so I had to use water to put them together again. The best part was that I could choose what my clay head would look like, the color of the eyes, hair, skin, as long as it had the right proportions.
